My phone bill more than tripled after starting to use Jaiku. Im not saying theres a causality and maybe im on the wrong plan alltogether. BUT will mobile connectivity ever be commoditised? Ever?

Interesting. It'd be useful to know what operator you're on and if the bill has risen because you're using more data or making more calls/texting
As a new resident of Finland I'm amazed there are no operators who offer unlimited SMS/MMS like I had it back in the states. At the same time I'm amazed that incoming calls and text messages are free.
@constantine: so called unlimited SMS/MMS-es in US, they are result of 2-3 years long contract slavery, and here you have choice at least due to insane competition among mobile operators (in US technically you almost had no choice)...
@silpol: i've been contract free for years now with t-mobile. you can buy a SIM without signing a contract in the USA. They just don't tell you this in television commercials. Most consumers don't even want to know about it because they think paying $100 for a phone is too much.
@mokka, are there not unlimited data plans in Finland anymore? I had unlimited data for a fixed charge back in 2003-04. Since then I haven't really paid my own phone bills so haven't kept up-to-date with what operators offer.
@constantine: I guess the company which you were visitor recently of, has still some lessons for you and exactly on this topic, they are just behind corner still
That was to say unlimited data not sms. Also, I wonder who needs unlimited outgoing sms? It's hard to send over 1000 sms/month even if you're typing a lot
Im with saunalahti, and have a creaping idea that my plan is unltd data, but only on 3G data. One fine day i fed up with the bad reliability / speed + functionality ratio of the network and manually changed to gsm solely. Ill get back to this when in the same location w the bill. RE: commoditisation, in theory wireless spectrum is ultimately limited (albeit more can be peer-produced) and cannot be commoditised. However from ALL added value services point of view it SHOULD. Their markets can be bigger than trad. mobile coms markets. But tell that to an operator.
@constantine I'm paying 16e/m for unlimited 2mbit/s data + 1000sms +1000mms. It's a 2year contract with saunalahti (total cost of the phone is the same as bought separately now and it's not locked)
Also you were in Morocco. So the bill comprises mostly from abroad phone calls & SMS. So Jaiku is not the one to blame (maybe partly from the 251 SMS abroad). BTW: I´m in the same location with that bill and it is not delightful experience:)

@mokka: talking about commodity... then mobile operator business should became utility as such, i.e. NO lucrative prospect for company-operator.

Last I checked there were pretty decently priced unlimited or nearly unlimited plans from e.g. Elisa & Saunalahti

Btw free outgoing sms would also incentivize spam

Wow! I never had this many people discussing my phone bill before. So its not jaiku but a Vodafone subsidiary to blame. Apologies Jyri!

ofcourse it will be commoditised.
everyones talking phone plans though, so that head isn't in the crowd yet.........
>>in theory wireless spectrum is ultimately limited dont people push things through smaller holes everyday?
